According to ‘sustainable development goals’ set by United Nations, ‘decent work and economic growth’ is necessary to achieve a sustainable society. Of course, it empathizes to be ‘sustainable cities and communities’, as well as ‘reduced inequalities’.

The following topic, bus strike in Bizkaibus, is relevant with our goals. Because it is the movement to make more equal relationship between the company or government and the drivers, as well as, to enhance drivers’ rights.

8 Good jobs and economic growth:

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and

productive employment and decent work for all.

Drivers of Bizkaibus are raising voices to protect their rights. So, they decide to act to achieve their goals, ‘enhancing wages’ and ‘reducing working hours’. They start to go on a strike from November 6th. They shortened amounts of buses in rush hours (especially in the morning). Many lines including the buses toward UPV/EHU in Leioa are not available in the morning. As well as bus toward university, some buses are not available for whole day. So, it seems many people need to come up with inconveniences during the strike.

Joline Ten Napel (21, student of Audiovisual Communication in UPV/EHU) felt inconvenience with bus strike. “In the morning, I was late for my class because of the strike. I didn’t know that there was strike. Bus came late and there were so many people inside. It was tough.”, Napel said. Since she is an Erasmus student, it was hard to get information about the exact schedule during the strike.

However, she still has positive understanding about their strike. “I don’t think I experienced inconvenience after I got the new timetable. Also, strike is sometimes necessary because otherwise, people in high-status like council or managers will not listen to bus drivers’ voices.”, she mentioned.

Another interviewer, Claudia Fernández (20, student of Audiovisual Communication in UPV/EHU) still has positive view about the strike even though she has to leave her house earlier in order to get the bus, “I think it is really important that the workers get fair salaries and fair working conditions. That is why I support them 100%.”, she said.

So if you are going to take a Bizkaibus, you need to keep looking the changed schedule in the website (http://www.bizkaia.eus/home2/Temas/DetalleTema.asp?Tem_Codigo=195&idioma=CA) or Twitter (https://twitter.com/bizkaibus).
